A Night On The Farm | Devlog 1

Welcome to the first blog post for A Night On The Farm, a new horror/mystery game I’ve been developing for a little while now. I want to use this first Devlog to talk about the inspiration and intention behind working on this new project.

A Night On The Farm is a first-person narrative adventure game in the horror/mystery genres. The game takes place on Halloween Eve and revolves around a couple who drive out to visit some long-time friends at their new house. Part of the fun of these experiences is the unknown, the mystery, and the surprise, so while I’ll share as much of the game’s development as I can over the next few months, it’s best if some things remain a secret. If all goes according to plan, I’ll have the game out by the end of 2023.

With this new project, I decided to branch away from 2D action-based game design. After several failed attempts to get Robozarro 2 off the ground, as well as a separate unannounced 2D project falling through, I was feeling incredibly burnt out on both game development and 2D design. However, after a much needed vacation, my desire to keep telling stories and keep developing games came back stronger than ever. While getting back into the swing of things, I realized I needed to work on something fresh and I needed to branch out from 2D work. After falling head over heels for Signalis late last year, and revisiting some retro classics, I did some research and stumbled into Haunted PS1, an inspiring community of fans and indie developers dedicated to eerie games with 90’s and early 2000’s visual aesthetics.

The PlayStation 1 is my favorite gaming console of all time. I regularly rented the console itself from Blockbuster during its early years, until eventually buying one used from FuncoLand just to own and play Resident Evil 2. Some of my favorite games on the system include classics such as RE2, Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis, and Silent Hill. More recently, I’ve gone back to play games I missed, like Galerians, Kouldelka, and a few others. I have a long history with the PS1, the franchises that started on it, and to this day adore the chunky textures, pre-rendered backgrounds, and overall vibe of the titles on the console. With A Night On The Farm, I’m looking to produce a bone-chilling experience that not only stands out from the pack, but also one the retro/horror community will enjoy.

That about does it for now. Thanks for checking out the blog and please look forward to more updates on the game in the coming weeks and months as it gets close and closer to release. Stay spooky!
